Click Account at the top right of your screen → Account Settings → Deactivate Account.

You can deactivate it. Don't try to log in to see if it works. It did. By trying to log in, it reactivates the account.

From the facebook home page (after logging in):

At the top, click Account, in the dropdown, click "Account Settings".

In the account settings page, at the bottom, click "Deactivate Account".

In the deactivate page, click any option but the last one (that you'll be back later), and confirm the deletion/deactivation (opting out of further facebook email if you wish).

okay so all you do is click account go to account settings n then click deactivate.
