THIS...may sound silly but what is with this # in front of everything what is the meaning?

I am 60 years old and don't keep up on this new computer lingo....
....but what is with this # in front of words that I see on TV?

It's called a hashtag and it's a way of putting a simple label on posts in Twitter (other social media now use them) so people can search for a subject.

Example: there might be lots of conversations about individual players but if they all carry the team's name as hashtag then fans can more easily find them.
