facebook email notifications do not work?

I tried to turn on notifications to forward all facebook messages to Gmail. It doesn't work, I don't get emailed when someone sends me the message. I tried removing the @facebook.com email address, but why should that matter since Gmail is my primary address for facebook?
That's just what I did, but no messages from friends on facebook forward to gmail, so it's not working.

What you need to do is:
Go into account settings
On the left, you'll see a sidebar.
Click NOTIFICATIONS
Press view/edit to choose whatever options you prefer.
