How do you get the old SMS-supporting Facebook Messenger app back?

I just recently updated my facebook messenger app, not fully understanding the new SMS integration. Now, your phone contacts MUST have the messenger app as well to be able to use it. I hate it! A lot of my contacts don't have the app (or facebook in general) so I need to go back to the old app.

I tried finding an old version of the app on AndroidDrawer, but it didn't work. I got an old version (tried multiple ones 1.7, 1.8, and 1.9), but it still didn't have sms support for some reason. And when I opened the old version, I got a popup at the bottom saying there is an update.

Does someone have a step-by-step guide of how to get the old version of this facebook messenger app back? It was so useful to have chat heads for my contacts (I tried Ninja SMS, but I wasn't impressed).

Hi... I had the same problem but i managed to find the old messenger app on the web but unfortunately I can’t remember the website now. If you like I can send you the APK file in an email. I just uninstalled the new messenger app and installed the old one and then I had my SMS functionality back. My email is kolbek@gmail.com
