Try following other prominent persons, they will usually reciprocate and follow you too.

Also try following popular channels like #youtube and click on @name in them and follow them, then they may just reciprocate and follow you too.

Having lots of Twitter followers is not my cup of tea, but if you like that sort of thing: you have to come up with tweets that people and companies will want to retweet because they add value to their marketing strategy.

For instance, if you tweet:

"I love the anti-lock feature on the #Acme anvils!"

odds are Acme Corp. will retweet that and start following you. But if you twee stuff like:

"You hear the one about the priest & rabbi who go into a potato place?"

why would anyone want to follow you?
