What is up with this Facebook request?

I got an e-mail saying somebody wants to add me on facebook and then I went to facebook and the friend request was not in my friend requests list. I went on the person's profile and instead of "respond to friend request" like it usually does it said "add friend". Does that mean that they tried to add me and then changed their mind? I think that would make the most sense. Am I correct?
I don't think it's spam because I know who this person is. They are a family friend. Still maybe it's spam?

I think they added you as a friend then when you didn't reply they deleted the friends request, they may have even accidentally sent it
