How to gain more followers on Twitter?

Ok I've had Twitter for over 2-3 years. I do tweet but it seems like nobody notices them!! I know one way is to follow "FollowBack accounts" but that doesn't always work!! So what to do? I mean there is people not even tweeting and they have thousands of followers. How?? Is there another way to do?? Some tips please??! =)

My tweets don't even show up when searching for keywords. So I did some googling around and found a twitter info page saying tweeting is not enough: You need to have followers, to *reply*, to *retweet*, to mark favorites, to take part in conversations - and LOTS
Recently I marked another favorite and actually "replied" to a stranger. He seems to have noticed it somehow, perhaps he had email alerts set up if someone replies, no idea. He did favorite my post and replied back. Anyhow, miraculously my next independent tweet did show up in a search!
Oh well, so far only that one. A couple days later a new posting - and invisible again.
So for now I'll try to post my tweets rather as replies where it makes sense, and do more retweets of favorites. Perhaps it helps, or perhaps it's just way too little, will see.
