Computer at 100% CPU usage?

Whenever I try playing games, my computer will either play smoothly at at least 60 FPS or else will lag like a crazy and show 100% CPU usage. I have an AMD 965 BE which is a great processor that I payed a lot of money for and I also have 8 GBs of RAM and finally a Nvidia GTX 550 Ti 2gb. I already did a virus check and nothing was found. Please help!

I don't know what OS you are using, so its hard to say for sure, but a few things to do first:
1. Disk Cleanup
2. Disk Defragment
3. Update your drivers
4. Ctrl+Alt+Delete and see what programs and processors are doing in the background...you might have a virus scan in progress that was scheduled, windows updater, windows automatic backup, etc going on in the background during certain times.
