how does Facebook and other similar sites make money?

i would have thought quite a lot of money would be needed to keep a site like Facebook up and running smoothly.

As it is free to use, where does it get its money from?

Donations, look at the apps, also the advertisements? They cost a hellalot to get up there.

They make a huge amount of money. I don't know the figures but if more people use them, the more money you get.
