Tips for starting a band?
I really want to start a pop punk/alternative rock band. I already have a drummer and a guitarist but I don't want to be a garage band for the rest of my life. I want to get our name out there, I want to be a inspiration to people. Can you give me tips and things I need to know to have a successful band? I don't want to do it for the money or anything like that, I just want to make a difference in people's life's. Because so many of the band I listen to right now helped me through so much and got me through rough times, I want to do that for people. Please give me serious answers guys, thanks !

Record your music and get on social media sites, that seems to work. I know a lot of bands nowadays who will use Tumblr - say, you have a sound similar to La Dispute, or Stick To Your Guns, or Neck Deep, whatever, go through that tag on Tumblr and follow the people who are posting about those bands. I've found a lot of bands because they followed me! Just make sure your URL is something obviously band related. Also, Warped tour always has a battle of the bands thing, you could try and get on that, if for nothing more than the recognition. Best of luck!

ADVERTISING IS KEY.
YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, G+, EVERYTHING. Make songs, record songs, play gigs, spread the word, put posters in the windows of record shops, etc.

Usually, you need more than just two people for a band. Get a bassist. Bass is crucial. 3 members is the minimum.
But yeah, just like the rest said, advertise. Write songs, record them, make an EP, put it out there, advertise, and you can even try to send it to some record companies.

Keep in mind this isn't an overnight thing. You don't just wake up one day and be famous. This takes months and even years of dedication.

what my band did is practiced enough, got all our friends on board and they told their friends. we did a few concerts then handed out free flyers and cds at other peoples shows. we also hosted house shows in my back yard and invited other relatively big bands (Family Thief did a split with Forever Came Calling & Played) and lots of their fans came and became fans of our band.
