For the application where you can send gifts, it says that some gifts are $1. Do you actually have to pay? And how?

Yes you do, I believe you get one free gift then you must pay with any major credit card.

Credit card.

You can download apps that send free gifts, but usually the initial facebook girl app charges though every once in a while there will free gifts- usually some type of advertisement.
