What is the Super Bowl?
I'm English and yesterday my social media was going crazy over the Super Bowl. I know it's to do with American football but that's about it, anyone?

The super bowl is the end result of a playoff where 12 of the best teams during the regular season go head to head and compete in what is like a world cup playoff.

It is the Final Game of the Season and it is when two teams, one from each Conference, The NFC and the AFC play each other for the Vince Lombardi trophy.
To get to the Superbowl after the regular season there are four rounds in the NFL playoffs. Both conferences use the same format. Here is a breakdown of each round: Wild card round - The two top seeds automatically advance to the Divisional playoff round, which is their reward for their regular season success. The two wild card teams travel to the home field of the lower-seeded division winners. The sixth seeded team plays the third seeded team, and the fifth seed plays the fourth seed. Divisional playoff round - The two top seeds have home field advantage in this round no matter who wins in the wild card round. The match ups depend on the results of the wild card round. If seed 6 wins, it plays seed 1 in the Divisional playoffs. However, if seeds 3 and 4 win their respective games, seed 1 plays seed 4. Conference championship round - The two teams that survive the first two rounds meet to play for the conference championship. The team with highest seed plays on their home field. The conference champion advances to the Super Bowl. Super Bowl - The world championship game, where the two conference champions play in a pre-determined site. Typically, the Super Bowl is played on the last Sunday in January or the first Sunday in February. |
