What does it mean when people put a # symbol in their facebook status?

I usually see it towards the end of peoples status's, for example

" oh i love going to the movies with friends #Callingitanight "

whats the point of the # symbol?

It's called a "hashtag".

I'm not sure if it's supposed to convey a feeling (through a phrase), or an action, or what.

Either way, I'm pretty sure I think it's stupid haha.

They mat have linked their twitter and fb acounts so there fb status is also their twittwr one and #callingitanight may be something thats trending on twitter
