Need help with facebook messenger app!?

I used to have the Facebook messenger app on my HTC however I uninstalled it but now I have downloaded it again. When I first open the app I have to type in my Facebook email and password. When I click log in it says "There was a problem connecting to Facebook. Please check your connection and try again." Why does it do this?! I have tried reinstalling, restarting my phone and disconnecting then reconnecting the internet. Any suggestions? Thanks!!

It is difficult to figure out the exact problem. But you can use Nimbuzz for facebook chat and instant messaging.
