Help me understand the process of suggesting a friend on Facebook?
I want to understand the process involved in friend suggestions on Facebook. Recently I joined Facebook and my friend said he was going to suggest a bunch of friends to me. I noticed that I am getting email notices trickling in stating so-and-so has added me to their Facebook account, but we need you to first confirm that you know the person.

So does Facebook first send an email to the person who is being suggested asking them if they want to add me? Then depending on their action I will get an email if I was added? In other words, my friend Joe suggests friends for me, one of them named Bob. Will Bob have to first approve the suggestion by adding me to his friends list before I get any notification?

I am a bit concerned if these suggested friends are not approving the suggestion first, because and I don't want to become Facebook friends with just acquaintances or people I barely know without their prior approval. I'm OK with making new friends with most of these people, but I just want to be aware if they have any say in the suggestion process. If they don't, that may change my mind before accepting them.

At first let me tell you what is suggested friends.

Suppose you are Bob....You'r friend is joe. When you add joe as your friend then joe thinks you may know one of his friend smith also. So he suggest smith. Now both you and smith will see each other in the "friends you may know" section.

You can choose the incidents ( like someone add you, someone post something on your wall etc. ) for which you'll get email in this link: http://www.facebook.com/editaccount.php?notifications

So i will suggest follow the above link , uncheck the checkbox beside "Adds me as a friend"....... Then you won't get any email when someone add you.

Lastly go to this link: http://www.facebook.com/privacy/?view=search and uncheck the tick box beside "A link to add me as a friend".......Now no one can add but will be able to send you message before they add you. So no more problem hopefully :-)
