Unknown new artists and bands have to come up with creative ideas to get their music out to the public and prospective fans. The music industry can be very competitive, and if you're not signed by a label and don't have an agent, you may be wondering how you'll ever connect to a fan base. Even if you have a tiny budget and no background in marketing, you can choose from several ways to market your music.

Tap Into the Online Market
If you don't already have a music or band social networking page, such as Facebook or MySpace, create one today. According to Unsigned Band Promotion, this is one of the best ways to gather feedback on your music, as well as find new fans. Be sure to create a page that allows you to add friends and fans, and make sure it's public (not private). Join other groups that will introduce you to potential fans, such as other music pages in the same genre. Change your avatar regularly and post daily updates about where you'll be playing, as well as other information that will get your music brand out there. Post your performances on shared sites, including YouTube and other similar sites, and be sure to link your social network page to it. Don't forget to upload photos and promotional videos to your page as well.

Give It Away
If you are unknown and are only seeking exposure to begin to build a fan base, you can give away your music for free. While this marketing technique should not be a long-term plan, if you find people who enjoy your music and are interested in your sound, they'll pay for it later. According to Music Biz Academy, giving away one or two free tracks, either in CD form or as a free MP3 download on your website, can set you apart from the tens of thousands of other new releases.

Allow Remixing
An article on BuzzSonic suggests that you can promote your music by offering various parts of it for remix. This may include offering your vocals, chorus or hook online, so be sure you're using music-creation software that will let you separate the different parts of your songs. You can post these items on your personal website or social networking page as well. Many DJs are interested in disassembled tracks to incorporate into their own original sets, and this is one way to get noticed. Research local house, hip hop and techno shows to learn about which DJs are popular, and reach out to them directly.

Hey Rambo, I know a lot of artists who have built a reputation that way. However, this way of offline promotion can be very consuming of your time and energy. I would try to do a lot of your music marketing online and combine it offline marketing / selling your music on the street. Here's what I'd do if I were you: Get a YouTube channel and post new music and videos consistently, get your own blog and post consistently on there, then capture email addresses from your YouTube and blog traffic. That way you'll be able to build a big and targeted mailing list. Further, use CDBaby.com to get your album or single on iTunes. You can send the iTunes link for your album to your email subscribers, or place it in the description of your YouTube videos. That's what works best for me. There's also a video training course on music marketing called MMM http://www.musicmarketingmastery.com/get-it which has helped me a lot. Also check out MusicThinkTank.com and Bob-Baker.com.
