Why do people overrated Durant past Dirk Nowitzki when he doesn't even think he's better than Dirk?

And he's right. He hasn't done anything yet. He hasn't even had ONE good playoff series yet and people put him ahead of Dirk because he's exciting and averages 30ppg. Really?

He's been in ONE playoff series in his life and put up 25ppg on 35%fg and 28%3pt with 4 turnovers per game. Dirk has put together a large amount of collosal playoff series and proven when it matters he will player better than Durant.

Almost every year Dirk's game elevates in the playoffs as oppose to Durants.

* Dirk in career elimination games: 28.4ppg, 12.2rpg, 49%fg, 39%3pt and 90%ft.
* Dirk in career game 7's: 28ppg, 15rpg,
* Dirk in the 2009 semi finals against the Nuggets had his fiancee sent to jail and he still averaged 34.4ppg, 11.6rpg and 4apg on 52%fg, 39%3pt and 92%ft.
Can Durant do that? NO.

In 2006 Dirk had against the Suns in game 5 scored 50 points and scored 22pts in the 4th quarter out scoring the entire suns team 22-20 himself in a crucial game 5 win.

* In the 2006 playoffs against the Spurs in their prime with a great defense holding teams to 88 points a game and with Bruce Bowen guarding Dirk at his best, Dirk sprained his ankle in game 3 and for the rest of the series averaged 29.8ppg and 14rpg.

The list goes on and on. Durant's body of work is not even close to Dirk's and he hasn't even had 5% of the great games Dirk has had in the playoffs. Because Durant looks funner to watch and averages 30 points on a lesser shooting percentage using up more of his teams possessions makes him better? In what world?

Dirk actually makes the people around him better and if he scores 25-26 in the regular season, that's because his game isn't to just go and get 30 every night (which he can) but he makes everyone better. He commands a double in the post and passes to shooters. He also lures bigmen away from the hoop so that teammates can drive and have a higher %.

Terry's 3pt % without Dirk (37%)/ With Dirk (42%)
Kidd's 3pt% without Dirk (34%3pt) With Dirk (41%)

Dirk makes people better and it's because of ESPN only hyping flashy perimeter players and not Dirk why kids everywhere will continue to underrate Dirk and put youngsters like Durant and Melo who haven't done anything past him.
@ NBA: Do some research before coming on here. What has Dirk done? Try 10x allnba team, 9x allstar, led the NBA in efficiency 2 years, became the only player in NBA history besides Bird to average 50/40/90 while scoring 25ppg. Weak argument man.
And because he has an MVP and Durant doesn't it's "he don't deserve it" when he carried his team to 67 wins that year. Wow.
@ Kick: THAT is my point. If Durant hasn't done anything, why put him up against an established future hall of famer that's better than him? That's underrating Dirk.
And that still has nothing to do with who's better right now.
Wow, people come on here and bring TWO bad moments for Dirk and act like that overshadows his entire body of work just to protect Durant because he's flashy and hyped up. Amazing.
@ Just Wade's daddy. The only one that sticks out to you is the one where the Heat overmatched him? Do you realize he put up 29pts and 15rebs in that game? It's not like he sucked in those final 4 games against the Heat you know. Comparing Dirk in year 3 to Durant in year 3 makes no sense when I'm asking for who's better right now and Durant mentioned Dirk's name without anyone bringing him up. Take his word for it.
OH BTW- Since you guys want to ONLY compare the young Dirk to him. Did you know that Dirk in 2002 averaged 33ppg, 55%fg and 77%3pt against Kevin Garnett in the playoffs when Garnett was younger and quicker? Even then he was a better playoff performer than Durant. So again, not even simplifying it down to benefit Durant works out to well.
@ NBA: Do some research, Kareem and Wes Unseld both won MVP and lost in the 1st round too. That whole series wasn't Dirk's fault. Using one bad instance to discredit someone makes little sense.

Probably cause Durant scores more and is a lot better at a lot of things. Hwoever, yes i agree with u dirk is really underrated. hes one of the top players in the leauge. however, durant is obviosulyl not gonna be cocky and say that people are better thah him, so i wouldnt really safdsf

This is like comparing kobe with lebron. Durant been in the league for about three years. Put up what Dirk accomplished when he was 21? He didn't do much.. Average 17ppg. Durant at 3year nba is better than dirk at 3year nba.

Because Dirk lost to the Golden state warriors a couple of years ago in the playoffs, while having won 65 or so games and the top seed in the west.
Also Dirk and the Mavs blew a 2-0 series lead to miami heat in the NBA finals
Also the Mavs always do good during the regular season, and screw up during the playoffs. The Thundar put Lakers to their limit and they are a young team, that's why they lost!
Plus Durant was the scoring champion, second overall pick, and a better all around player.

Durant is very cautious not to step on any toes or show disrespect to players who were in the league before him, so that part does not fly because he is not going to say he is better than Dirk. At this point, Dirk is more experienced and that makes him more able to adapt to different situations. Dirk is a better shooter, but Durant plays better defense. I say that the only way that you could really compare them would be look at them in the same situation as much as possible. That means that you can only look at Dirk in years 1, 2, and 3 at this point. So let's look . . .

Yep, it looks close to me too. As for Dirk in career elimination games, the only one that sticks in my mind was a series against a way overmatched average Miami team in the NBA Championship. Who knows if Kevin will be as good as Dirk over a career, but he is off to a better start.

Alright screw it KD is officially one of my fav player now......I mean the media hypes him up to a top 3 level (which I highly disagree with) and he himself says he isnt on par with them......

To answer ur question its because Wing players have been given special attention to the media ever since Michael Jordan (thanks a lot MJ) and they are constantly looking for that one wing player that can do multiple things and dominate on multiple levels.....Durant ever since college has been given alot of hype and honestly because people thought he could be a big time scorer and be the next Lebron or Kobe. Before this year IMO Durant never really stood out as a top 15 player to me. After this season I do think he is top ten but he needs to

-improve on defence
-improve on passing
-improve on driving
-keep playing at a higher level each season

For him to be a top 3 player.....players dont get to be in the top 5 after one season....it takes 3 legit seasons IMO
