Social trends would include the trends of people relying more heavily on e-mail, texting and computers to socialize. You could study the impact of social networks like facebook, mypage, and twitter and their impact on how people react with others.

Political trends would be things like the trend of giving the federal government more power and responsibility for providing things for us such as health care. Politically, the US has been slowly getting more liberal in their political views.

Personal trends can be anything from the increasing acceptance of homosexuality to the trend of having more acceptance of people wearing very skimpy clothing. The acceptance of women nursing babies in public or the trend of people buying larger homes or larger cars. Another area is how many people are choosing to "go green" but if you research how government is forcing people to go green then it would fall under "political" instead of personal.

Religious trends could be the general trend away from traditional churches and ideologies or a more open attitude towards people with different religious beliefs. There is also a slowly increasing nuymber of people who do not believe in any religion.
