If you used to be close friends with someone but you two stop speaking and weren't close at all anymore would you remain their friend on Facebook and still follow each other on instagram? Why or why not?

yes. unless something happened like a fight between you two i would still follow them on insta and Facebook or any other social site. its part of life were you tend to be apart for a while but soon you will relies how good of friends you really were and how awkward would it be if they got a notification saying you just followed them if they thought you two were still friends.

I would say you should still remain friends on social things, my best friend and I have totally ruined our relationship, but I still care about him so I like to keep track of how he's doing sometimes. on the off chance that you might be close again you wouldn't have the awkward friend acceptance that everyone can see.
