Can someone tell if you follow them on facebook?

I know there used to be a thing that said "show in newsfeed" or whatever, and you could either select it or not select it, and the person didn't get notified. I stopped getting updates from a guy I'm facebook friends with because he was annoying me, but now we get on better and it's kind of bugging me that I have to specifically go to his profile to see his stuff instead of it just being in my newsfeed. Only thing is, the "show in newsfeed" thing's gone, and you either "follow" someone or you don't.
So anyway, I was wondering... do they get notified if you follow them? Because I don't want to freak him out... or worse, make him think I'm into him (which I'm not)... :/

they dont get a notification for it, but they can see a list of who is following them
