Generating Traffic to one's website?
I am a newbie at internet marketing and would like to find out about generating traffic to ones site. I came across a site on the internet that charges $19 a month to promote one's site. It is called Market-it. Has anyone heard about this site or have any useful ideas about generating traffic?
Any help very welcome!

There are several ways to generate traffic to your site which you can do yourself for free. I have been marketing sites since the late 90's and I very rarely pay for anything. Especially from services such as Market-it. If they were really that good it would cost much much more.

The first thing you need to do is your keyword research. What are the keywords / keyphrases in search engines where you need to rank in order to pull in the traffic. This is obviously heavily dependent upon the type of site you are operating. You can use the Google Keyword Tool to get started, it is of course free and the link is in the sources box below.

Once you have your list of keywords you then need to start building links using these keywords as your achor text. There are many free ways you can do this too.

- Directory Submission
- Article Marketing
- Blog Commenting
- Account Profiles

Once you start building links to your site you will see your site start to rank for the terms you have targeted in the search engines and then you will start to get more and more traffic.

Some good free ways to create traffic that I have been successful with are as follows

My top 5

1. Social Bookmarking - bookmark your own sites or use submission service such as social maker

2. Article Marketing - create good articles about your niche then submit to the major article directories such as E zine Articles.

3. Yahoo Answers - Go ahead and answer some question about the subject your website is about, this technique is highly targeted because you know the people are interested in your niche otherwise they wouldn't be asking questions about it.

4.Classified ads - Create an ad for your website, and post it to some classifies such as one of the biggest site USfreeads

5. Create short video clips of your site, make a slide show of your front page, or yourself in front of the camera explaining what you do, and submit it to You tube, or use a free service called Tube-mogul which will submit your video to numerous video sites.

Or you could build a real business long term and create a content focused theme based website on something you love or knowledgeable about using tools that provide you with keyword research of what people are typing into Google with stats on search volume and competition, I use SBI for this.

Anyway I listed the sites below for you to research into..
Goodluck with your business.

You don't say what your website is which is a shame because you could get get much better advice if we knew what it was exactly.

Be very wary of companies/people offering to SEO your site to the top of Google. There are so many you can't possibly know them all. Many are just plain rubbish. If you consider any ensure you get some references from sites they have SEO'd and talk to the site owners directly. If they can't give you references then move on!

As far as other techniques are concerned they are wide ranging and numerous.
Avoid PCP if you are not an expert. Many a failed (and now very poor) marketers have gone that route.

Remember it's not just traffic you need ( I can get you 30,000 visitors month for $15 but you won't get a single sale), it's targeted traffic with COMMERCIAL INTENT. I.e you need people who want to buy and people who want to buy your product specifically.

Also consider the profitability of your site/product as this will decide what you need to do. If you want to use any kind of paid traffic generation then the first thing you need to assess is your ROI (return on investment). I.e you need to pay less for your advertising than you make in profit. Sounds simple but trust me this is where most people fail and end up seriously out of pocket.

If you have a low profit margin then SEO (natural search) traffic may be your only option. Yes it takes a bit longer to get your traffic but when done properly it doesn't take that long and it can be sustainable for years.

If you want to generate some free quick traffic then there is a great ebook on using the latest web 2.0 techniques ( latest buz stuff) which you can use to generate highly targeted traffic. Targeted traffic is the key, along with commercial intent.

Fact is no-one just bangs up a website, no matter how pretty, and makes money. You've made the first step but now you need to do a bit of work on perfecting it to make it profitable. That's down to driving traffic to your site, testing to ensure targeted traffic with buying intent and improve conversion rate's (visitors to buyers ratio)

Seriously grab the ebook I mentioned at http://www.trafficfury2010.com it has loads of info that will work well with any site and it's free.

best of luck
