Marketing vs. Graphic Design Major?
Hey!

So, I'm a Sophomore currently attending Spring Arbor University in Michigan. I'm currently a Marketing major with a minor in Art (focusing on Graphic Design), but I'm having second guesses about my combination.

I'm very visual, creative, and kind of a perfectionist/OCD. I'm also pretty computer savvy. I really enjoy art, but I felt like a business major would be more secure, so I went with Marketing, since it is a more creative business major. However, even though I'm an art minor, I feel like I'm not going to do as much of the designing aspect in business. However, something is keeping me from majoring in Graphic Design, I don't know what it is.

If you guys could give me some insight of what combination sounds best, that would be great. I don't what jobs I would get if I minored vs. majored in Graphic Design.

I'm really torn between the two. I would like to double major, but that would mean I'd be in school longer than 4 years.

Thanks guys!

I think you could consider 'Online Marketing' as almost all such marketing has elements of graphic design in them. But first you will have to be clear within how much you really like marketing compared to graphic design. Also from your question, you do seem to favor the commercial element for security more than art as an end in itself. So, you could look at all the online marketing options - email, social media, search engine besides others.

Honestly, I think that you could go with either one and have a good combination. I majored in Graphic Design and minored in Marketing, and this combination did help me in many ways. I have also talked with a lot of people in Marketing departments at companies and they say that having experience with design is helpful/necessary.

I've also talked to a lot of designers and many of them get burnt out of all of the designing, and don't really like it anymore. If you minor in marketing, you may not get burnt out of the thing you really love, which is art. If you get burnt out of the marketing you can move on without losing your passion.

Either combination will be great, just do what you want.
