How do I get rid of spam and advertisements on my facebook page?

When I log on my laptop at home I often times has tons of unwanted advertisements and spam, But when I log onto my desktop computer there is no spam at all. Could something be wrong my laptop? I have blocked all pop-ups but still get the unwanted junk is there something I need to download to fix the problem?

Stay away from Firefox. It's not what it used to be and is full of security holes now. Still not as bad as IE, but worse than Chrome. (It also takes up alot more resources)
