Why are the profile pictures so small on facebook?
When im searching for old classmates or through groups you cant tell who the person is sometimes coz the picture is so small so youre not sure whether to contact them or not. Is this a problem that anyone else finds or am i the only one and why dont facebook let you be able to expand the profile pic?
No, youve got me totally wrong man. What i mean is that when you search for someone by name there are lots of entries that come up but how are you supposed to know which one is the person you used to go to school with if you cant see their face in the photo? Its just pretty annoying as it would be nice to catch up with some old friends.

It's just one of the settings facebook has so people only become friends with people they know, if you know someone's name then you don't need to see a picture of them, else just give it a shot and message them and see if it is someone you know.

Actually, you CAN see the picture in a larger size, it's just obvious. (I'm a Facebook geek, so... I figured this out a longggg time ago.)

HOW TO:
Search for the person you are looking for.
Right click on the person's photo (the little version that comes up when you search).
Select "Properties".
Highlight the URL in the "Address (URL):" section.
CRTL + C (Copy) that URL.
CRTL + V (Paste) that URL into the address bar.
The end of the URL will say "/s" followed by numbers. For example, http://profile.ak.facebook.com/profile#/...#_####.jpg . CHANGE THE "s" TO "n" (lowercase, obviously without the quotation marks).
Hit the enter key on your keyboard.
That will show the profile picture in the size it appears when you're looking at someone's profile.

Based on the picture, it still might be difficult to see who the person is, but this will at least allow you to see it larger.

If you still can't figure out if it is your old classmate or not, check to see if you guys have mutual friends. If you stilll can't figure it out, then I would just message the person and ask! There's not harm or loss in trying!!!
