Why was Churchill voted out in 1945?

When he took over as PM Britain had an empire and was extremely wealthy, after 4 years we were bankrupt and lost our empire, why do you think he would have been popular? he was a fool and a tyrant and wasn't even elected by the public in the first place

the Labour Party created the Welfare state, which promised to look after everyone 'from cradle to grave' and this was very attractive to a majority of people who had lived through the hardships of war. Before the war, although there had been some free medical care available to the poor, it was limited, and mainly voluntary, and the prospect of the National Health Service was an enticing one. the labour party promised a new era that would be more fair and more equal.

He was seen as too much of a war man. What is more, Labour said they would bring the troops home - and they did.

It wasn't just a swing against the Tories - there was a cross party agreement not to stand against Churchill, but a pretty obvious lunatic did so and got 20,000 votes.
