Your question does well to ask for difference between Facebook years ago and Facebook now. Aside from its pure numbers growing, Facebook now includes users from nearly every demographic.

In terms of market potential, this is very promising. There are a lot of directions Facebook commerce could go, and right now a lot is up in the air. There are dozens of companies now offering Facebook storefronts - their proliferation was driven by Facebook moving away from FBML to iframes in March of this year. Iframes give third party developers a ton of freedom in design and layout, as well as the ability to securely enter credit card information and checkout - all from a Facebook session.

There is a lot of discussion about how Facebook is too social to be an effective marketplace, though. The article* cited below talks about how right now, Facebook stores aren't actually making a lot of sales. This is debatable, but the author's point is that social media doesn't always tie in to sales - a tenant of every social media marketing strategy. Recently, there was another Quora** question asking something similar. Basically, social media is more about getting your brand into the hours and hours that people spend on social networks, and harnessing the viral capability of likes and shares to get your image out there. Even if sales don't happen on the Facebook stores, there is still a lot of value in visibility and marketing power.

Good luck!
