How do I avoid being facebook creepy?

So I added this kid on facebook who im not personally friends with, but we have a lot of friends in common and have seen each other at our common activities. I figured since I knew his face he would recognize me and it'd be a nice way to branch out and be social. However when he added me back he msgd me and asked if he knows me.. what do I do? Now its definitely creepy since he apparently doesn’t recognize me. Should I respond to his msg? I know he'll know something's up if I don’t or reply if I unfriend him. But what should I say so he isn’t permanently creeped?
Sometimes im too overly social and its creepy and I I wish I could just take it back…
please help!
