Facebook and notifications?

I get a notification everytime anyone posts anything on facebook...not just for me, but any of my friends. I sign in and have 99 and none are important to me!! How do I turn this off??
but it's not e-mail...they tell me when anyone changes their status. Instead of it showing up on newsfeed only, I get a notification too

you might be subscribed to them, see if thats it, if so unsubscribe, also you can go to "account settings" than notifications on the left tabs, than you can edit them out.

account settings is located where the log out button is, right above it.

On your facebook profile page, look for and enter into the SETTINGS section, find the command to turn OFF notifications via email. That should fix things. Still, a few notifications WILL make their way in your email---but they'll be greatly reduced.

You can also select WHO can notify you of things and what particular notifications you care NOT to receive.
