to let your friends know that it would be great if they would attend the same symposium the following summer?

My husband and I have a disagreement. He thinks that I shouldn't advertise the conductor's name, that I am not the marketing department for the University...

I on the otherhand don't see the problem since it is open for any conductor to attend as long as they pay for it and find a hotel.

What is wrong with recommending that people improve themselves by saying, "Hey, you should go to this event."?

nothing is wrong with it. the next time your husband wears any clothing with a logo on it, tell him that he is not brand x's marketing department. he must have a personal vendetta with the school or something...

I don't see a problem with this, these events are always more fun if you already know someone there, it expands your networking. You meet new people and your friends meet them too and so on. All these contacts will make a difference after you finish your degree (s) and are looking for work. Best wishes.

There's nothing wrong with what you did. If your husband feels this way, he should ensure that nothing in his wardrobe has a visible label or slogan, pry the make/model tags off his car, bring along plain cups or bags when he visits take out restaurants to swap for the branded ones, etc.. This way he can rest assured that he is not infringing on or substituting for any company's marketing strategy. Also, he should never share his opinion or experience on any consumer goods or services. All this seems silly, no? He needs to relax. You are doing yourself and others a service by sharing a positive experience. More people should do the same instead of only sharing the bad stuff.
