If not then what other social networking apps can be installed?

Here are some facebook compatible apps that work on older iPods:

Quickly for Facebook with Video Chat https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/quickly-...36714?mt=8

You can use this tool to find other compatible apps in the iTunes store. Try typing "texting" in the search box.
