Facebook messenger lost best friend's thread?

Okay, I had messenger open to my best friend's thread. My cat walked on the keyboard and deleted his entire thread. Now, not only is he not in my inbox anymore, I cannot see when he messages me unless I open a new Message each time and send him a message first. The thread then reloads everything, but as soon as I exit the window, it all goes away again. It even does this on my messenger app on my phone. I cannot even search for his thread, it does not show up and I cannot just start a new thread. We have both checked, we are still friends on facebook. I have no clue what my cat hit, but its annoying to have to open a new message, search his name, and send some random message just to see if he's contacted me. If anyone knows what happened or what I can do to fix this I really appreciate it!
