The less things you share,
the more safe you are.

That's the simplest answer I can come up with

Facebook has very specific privacy settings. You can edit your privacy settings to determine what information can be seen and by whom. You can easily make it so that, unless someone is your "friend" on facebook (and is signed into facebook) they can't see ANY of your information). You can also create LISTS on facebook.

https://www.facebook.com/help/?faq=19041...query=list

Then, when you post, you can post it for everyone, just for family, just for close friends, etc. You decide which people are on a particular list, and photos, updates, anything, can be targeted to ONLY a specific list, or your could even post to everyone EXCEPT a particular list. YOU decide who can or can't see the post. You could even create posts that only YOU can see, if you wanted to.

Safety is all in the security settings.

Now, to be completely safe: don't use facebook apps. Facebook apps will request access to your private data, including your friends lists, profile info etc. The GOOD news is that these apps are required to TELL you what data it will access. The apps give you the option to cancel without giving access to your data, and should you give access to your data, facebook lets you cancel the app at any time, thus minimizing the damage (but they'll still have the data they accessed at the time).

As long as you use your privacy settings and don't use unnecessary apps, you're clean.
