Facebook - Why can't I add as a friend?

I found an old friend on facebook, and while I can see his pictures and such, there's not the typical 'request friend' or even the option to send him a message available. Any ideas why this could be?

They may have their setting so that only friends of friends can add them. So if you have no mutual friends on facebook you will not be able to add him.
