Cheer captain details?
is it possible for a junior to be cheer captain? Also, how do the dynamics work between the coach and the captain? Does the captain coach the team along with the actual coach, like an assistant? How does the cheer captain get picked? Lastly, when is she told she's captain? Right before summer because they have practice during summer? Thanks!

Hi!

I've been a captain for my cheer team for a few seasons now, and it is absolutely possible to be a captain as a junior as long as your coach or team don't set it as a rule that it's seniors only. As captain, you're job is to be a leader. You have to keep everyone fired up, focused, and prepared. Usually, you'll lead warm-up/cool-down time at practice. Remember that being a captain isn't being a coach, so don't act like you are and tell everyone what they should and should not be doing. Constructive criticism is okay, but keep it to a minimum because you don't want to upset the girls on your team. Outside of practice, it's good to keep in contact with the coach about anything she needs you to do. Relay any information given to you to the other girls on your team via text or a facebook group page. Keep everyone informed!!! If the team votes for captain (like my school), you usually find out into the season a bit so the coach sees who stands out as a leader and positive role model. She'll always be watching for this! At my school, we had a few captains (around 3) every season. I hope you have a great season!
