Why is it socially acceptable to mock Christianity but not other religions?
I've noticed a growing trend on social media, amongst younger people especially, a pathological hatred of Christianity, to which I am appalled at, but I also keep asking why?

First and foremost, I'm an atheist. However, I am one of the few that can be described as 'true neutral'. I don't care whether you follow a religion or whether you don't. At the end of the day, so long as you're a good person, that is all that matters.

One thing that baffles me is the persistent notion that all Christians are lunatic homophobes who are constantly trying to brainwash people. I may be atheist, but I have grown up around Christians - none of whom were homophobic or in any way bad people. On the contrary, they were some of the nicest people I have ever met.

The same can't be said for a lot of atheists. As a matter of fact, I tend to disassociate myself with them purely due to the disgusting way they treat some religious people.

For many people, it seems to be a bandwagon thing more than anything.

"Huehue fuck religion. I'm cool, right guys?" - every person on a social forum when it comes to religious debate

However for some, comes some real hypocrisy. Not just from ordinary people, but celebrities. Ricky Gervais for example, a man who prides himself on being an atheist, but goes about it in one of the most arrogant and rude ways.

Anyway, my point is, why is Christianity constantly mocked and ridiculed when there are certain religions that actually are far more intolerant towards homosexuality? (Without wanting to fuel an angry debate, I won't mention which one, but I think you can have a pretty good guess.)

The word "Christian" has lost its meaning today. The diversity of Christianity might be a reason it is easy to mock. There are but a few or a low percentage left that truly understands what it means to be a follower of Christ. However when persecution increases the true will stand.

Salvation is not about self-fulfillment, it is about self-denial. It is not about self-love, it is about self-hate. It is not about self-esteem, it is about self-disdain. It is the rejection of who you are. It is hating yourself and loving God. Hating sin in your self and fighting it. And so the sinner is in an impossible situation because of his fallenness pride dominates his life, on his own he can not hate himself, and because he loves himself he cannot love God perfectly. But that is how you get into the Kingdom.

That is why there is only one way, through the Lord Jesus Christ.

Well, even though I'm an atheist, I completely agree. I think all religions should be able to cope with people poking fun at them, to a reasonable extent. I think it's bizarre that you aren't allowed to make a cartoon or write a book that is in any way critical of Islam, for example, without provoking a storm of violence and ridiculous behaviour, death threats etc, which are out of all proportion to the so called 'offence'. On the whole, in my experience, Christians cope a little better than muslims with this sort of thing.

I do not think it is in any way reasonable for people to issue death threats, fatwas, or picket films, book launches etc. Words and pictures cannot harm you. When you start burning books, it is a slippery slide to murder and genocide. The Nazis burned books. Then they burned and otherwise murdered several million people.

Religious and political correctness can go too far. Today people mustn't be homophobic, sexist, racist, etc, but it is apparently perfectly ok to ridicule the ugly, the old, the fat, the mentally ill etc. This is not any sort of equality.
