how does this mutual friends on facebook work?

How exactly does this mutual friends thing work. For example, My friend(example) and I have the same friend on facebook, but when I look at his(example) mutual friends our friend(example2) is on his(example) list of mutual friends but when I check mine out he is not on mine. Why is that?

OK. that is a bit confusing but I'll try.

A mutual friend is a friend of yours that is also a friend of one of your friends. Oftentimes you will hear someone say that they met their husband through a mutual friend. That means the husband was friends with X and the wife was friends of X.

So, on Facebook, when your friend (example) goes to your page HE should see (example 2) listed as a mutual friend.
When you go to (example)'s page, you should see (example 2) on HIS page.
