Even though your account is private, your messages can be sent as long as the person you are sending them to is following you, also when your account is private only the people you accept to follow you can read you tweets and when you are private the tweets you send to others will be sent normally

when twitter is in protected mode, you have to follow them in order for your tweets and favorites to be visible to them. If you were following the people you message at the time of sending the message, then they should be able to see it just fine. If you weren't following them at the time, follow them now then resend the message.
