Twitter can expand your network in the industry a little bit--but it's not a substitute for real marketing. If you are a designer, start building a portfolio of the designs you've created and which are being worn or sold in your particular area. Yes, you should know about the other designers--but if you're really serious about this field, which IS a very difficult one to break into--you need to start by attending a good design school and getting as much education as you can about techniques, materials and the business end of it. ESPECIALLY on the business end of things. You need to know the price points, the manufacturing costs, the feasibility of designs and the market you're entering. That's a lot of knowledge to amass. No one will just "discover" you. You have to aggressively go after the people in the industry who can get your name and designs out there. An apprenticeship at a design house or manufacturer can provide other contacts. It takes a lot of time to build this network, and you have to keep at it. The field changes so rapidly you could be scrambling to keep up.
