if i turn off facebook chat can people still see if im online?

i have a ridiculous amount of homework to do, but i still take facebook breaks every once in a while to reward myself. however, they can't last too long and if someone messages me, i'll be there for a really really long time. if i turn chat off (click "options" on that list that says if people are online or not and select "turn of chat") does it still show up if im online to other people? i know they can see if i post a status or something like that, but can they tell if i'm just online and scrolling through it?
if i log back in, will chat automatically turn back on, or will it stay off until i manually turn it back on?
