I don't get message alerts from one of my friends?

This only happens with one of my friends (that I know of), when we send each other messages, neither of us get notifications or chat notifications, and nor do they appear in the messages tab (only the chat tab, once we've opened it to check).

We've had to resort to commented on each others timeline to check their chat-log if we want to strike up a conversation, which isn't the best or most efficient way.

We've tried everything - Deactivating and reactivating our accounts, blocking then unblocking each other, both ways. Security settings, privacy settings. Everything short of starting new accounts, which neither of us will do.

I've never known this to happen to anyone else, what can I do to fix it? It's very annoying. Any help would be great, thanks.
