Can i use wifi without a data plan?

I have a Andriod prepaid phone on at&t but i dont pay for a data plan because its too expensive for my parents, however i heard that using available wifi doesnt count as data usage? so i wont be charged AT ALL for it right? even if i use the market to download free apps or getting on facebook?

If there's a wifi connection avaliable yes, it's free.

That's what I do when there is to cut down on the data usage and save some money.

I'd also reccomened the app "Battery Defender" not only does it save battery use, but you can turn on or off wifi and data with just one press of a button instead of going to all of the setting menus...

You can search for available wifi on your neighborhood that doesn't have password, if you can connect to them, your internet will become free.
