By default, your privacy settings allow everyone to find you in a search. However, when people click on your search listing, they won’t be able to see all of the information in your profile. They will always be able to view your name, gender, profile picture, username, and networks. Any additional information that they can view when they click on your search listing is determined by your privacy settings.

You can control who can find you in a search by restricting your privacy settings through the Privacy Settings page. Select the "View settings" link in the "Connecting on Facebook" section. From there, you can restrict who can search for you on Facebook. You can also control how people can contact you once they've found you.

Well, you've just changed the settings - all the privacy information is already out there and it doesn't go away the minute you change the settings. It takes awhile for the information to be processed out.

Click on "Account" at the top right corner. Go to "Privacy settings", click on "view settings" (Should be at the top of the page under connecting on facebook) Then find the one that says "search for you on facebook" and change it "custom" then select the "only you" setting.

Tada. You're free from searches.

Try logging OUT and then searching on your name. You will find that your profile doesn`t come up.
The searches are tailored to your profile specifically.Nobody else will get your profile in the search.

It's rather hard, cause Facebook is indexed by search engines and you can be found even without logging in to Facebook on site like 1 below.
Good luck)
