Twitter API: developing it, I set-up 103 people I "follow". Suddenly, I have numerous new followers. Why?

I am not a fan of social networks - at ALL -.
Nevertheless, I am developing http://ethan.jrcw3.com (soon to be capora.com), a huge SN giving access to all your SNs in one single place.
To clear up the works, I HAD to subscribe to many SNs... (Damn!)
I subscribed to twitter, and, as I need to find out how the display work when someone has hundreds of "friends", I "followed" a few people...
Now, I am receiving alerts from twitter telling me that "I" have new followers! And these are not even the people I follow!
Can someone explain me what is going on?

that's normal, i have 23 followers on twitter and i don't know any of them, and i follow people like shaquile o'neil and he doesn't follow me lol

go to twitter.com/elieobeid7 and see who i follow and who follows me...

on twitter you are not asked to confirm that you know your followers but you can do that from the setting, it's not a default feature though...
