Facebook shows that we have one mutual friend but...?

So when I search this person it says that we have one mutual friend. Now I know that there is only one specific person that our mutual friend could be BUT when I click on mutual friends list, it doesn't show anybody. Is there any way either of these people could be hiding that they are friends on Facebook?

No it means that either they were once friends as that happens and when they delete the friendship the mutal friend thing still shows but isn't there or the mutal friend deleted there account.
