why would my ex keep talking to me?

after my ex assumed i was sleeping with his old friend who's now my roomate he texted me something rather rude. then after about two weeks he messaged me apologizing and said quote
"i'm sorry i treat you like someone i'm not in love with, like someone i don't want to talk to me, but that's all i want. sorry." i know this isn't a good thing to be told but still why wouldn't he just stop talking to me or delete me from facebook.
and why would he be a hypocrite by saying he doesn't feel aweful about the way hes been treating me but apologize everytime we communicate?
i'm moving on from him but i would like more understanding on the subject.

He regrets it and the only way he feels to make him feel better is to apologize.

I have gone through this motion before, you are very depressed and all the mistakes you made with that one person creates a void in your heart and apologizing for it helps repair it but not completely.

its pretty much how the body works you have a foreign entity in your system and your brain tries to find a way to remove it.

i.e. Him being hurt = his brain making him apologize = to possibly feel better.

Or I can be completely wrong and he is trying to be friends with benefits and is a complete asshole.
