how do tumblr hashtags work?

on Instagram when you upload a photo and use hashtags, your photo can be seen at the top of the list when you click on its hashtag. in tumblr, when I upload a photo, the hashtag shows other photos of that hashtag but i don't see mine. Im confused how it works. and what are some tips on getting my posts seen by others.

The photo should show up at the top of the list, but there seems to be a trouble with the system, and the post doesn't always appear when it should. I've experienced the same thing with some of my posts, but everything I tag shows up now. Either wait for it to sort itself out on it's own, or message Tumblr staff and explain what's wrong.

Something that not every one knows: only the first five tags of each post make your post show up in the tags. The rest are just for you, if you want to write comments in the tags or use them for organising within your own blog. This means you have to be careful with which five tags you write first. Only use tags that are relevant to the post, don't just use the tags that are popular, because people aren't going to bother looking at your post if it's not what they were searching for.

Also, don't call them hashtags, no one calls them hashtags. Say tags.
