Does Facebook randomly display friend pictures?

I'm referring to the 6 pictures of friends that Facebook displays on the main page of your profile. How does Facebook determine which 6 friends to show?

I use to think it was just random, but for the past couple of days, it's been the same 8 or 9 friends alternating. Anybody know why?

i'm pretty sure it's random. maybe you only have 9 friends haha nah jk, it's probably just coincidence.

Its ramdom but if you click edit on the top right of the box now with the new facebook it allows you to keep certain friends there all the time so I edit it to my top 6 friends its easier.
