Proxies are the easiest thing to block on the net. Because of this any proxy that works in China is likely run by the government. Most free proxies are run by hackers and foreign governments who want to run scams and do denial of service attacks. Some are run on the cheap with low bandwidth and advertisements to make money on the ad clicks.

All the Facebook, Twitter and other social site people using proxies have inadvertently helped the current denial of service attack against these sites. This is because many of these free proxies have planted bots on users computers that are controlled by the hackers. They actually run the attack from YOUR computer and thousands like it.

The two largest groups of question on Yahoo Answers in Security are how do I get a free proxy and how do I get rid of all the trojans and viruses on my computer. This is not a coincidence.

If you want to unblock China securely, with full encryption so you can't be censored you need a Personal VPN. That is the only real answer but it costs a few bucks.
