The Kindle Fire is a mini tablet computer version of Amazon.com's Kindle e-book reader. Announced on September 28, 2011, the Kindle Fire has a color 7-inch multi-touch display with IPS technology and runs a custom version of Google's Android operating system. The device—which includes access to the Amazon Appstore, streaming movies and TV shows, and Kindle's e-books—was released to consumers in the United States on November 15, 2011. On September 7, 2012, upgrades to the device were announced with consumer availability to those European countries with a localized version of Amazon's website (United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy and Spain).

You can use it for almost 90% of the stuff a computer is used for (except for the heavy tasks and games). Its highly portable, you can also use it for skype and web surfing.

Complete list of stuff you can do on a Kindle Fire:

The main reason for getting the Kindle Fire HDX is when you need a device for daily casual use like, Facebook/ twitter, searching around for stuff, watching movies and stuff like this.

Also keep in mind that its an eReader tablet, thus you would get more benefit of reading features from this device, compared to other tablets in market.
