Twitter Follower Question?

I just made a Twitter and I was wondering in order to have followers do you have to accept follower request because I haven't gotten any followers yet. My account isn't protected and this is my first time using Twitter so I'm trying to figure things out

You don't have to accept follower requests unless your account is private, other wise if they follow you it does it automatically
